It depends on volume. Plenty of mid-sized companies do fine with a well-designed ordinary database. We recommend the simplest option that solves your case.
What happens when I change my invoicing system?
The pipelines are built in parts, so swapping a source affects only the piece that reads it. That is one reason not to build everything inside the reporting tool.
